A resting adult pulse of 60 to 100 beats per minute is the textbook range — but "resting" and "adult" are each doing a lot of work in that sentence. Children run faster, athletes run slower, and the same person can swing thirty beats between the sofa and the top of the stairs. Here's how to read the number properly, what's normal at every age, and when a slow or fast pulse is worth a second look.

Measure it when the person has been sitting quietly for a few minutes — count the pulse at the wrist for a full 60 seconds, or read it off a monitor or pulse oximeter. A resting rate below 60 is called bradycardia; above 100 is tachycardia. Neither is automatically a problem.

Endurance athletes routinely rest in the low 50s or 40s and feel completely well — their hearts move so much blood per beat that they simply don't need to beat as often. A fast pulse is usually a response to something rather than a fault in its own right. Fever pushes it up by roughly ten beats a minute per degree Celsius. Pain, dehydration, anxiety, blood loss, caffeine, and stimulants all do the same. So when the number is high, the more useful question is what's driving it. The pulse is often the messenger.
One more figure people ask about: a rough maximum heart rate for exercise is about 220 minus your age. It's only a ballpark, and it's a ceiling for activity, not a resting target.
