Divide the remaining volume in mL by the current flow rate in mL/hr. For example, 750 mL remaining at 125 mL/hr = 750 ÷ 125 = 6 hours until the bag runs dry.
Infusion pumps can vary slightly due to line resistance, occlusions, and patient movement. Always physically check the bag rather than relying solely on calculated times. Some pumps display a 'time to complete' reading directly.
A 1000 mL bag running at 125 mL/hr lasts 8 hours (1000 ÷ 125 = 8). This is why 125 mL/hr is a common maintenance rate — it delivers a 1-litre bag over a standard 8-hour nursing shift.
A 1000 mL bag at 100 mL/hr lasts 10 hours (1000 ÷ 100 = 10). At 1000 mL over 10 hours you get exactly 100 mL/hr, a convenient round rate for maintenance fluids.
